100 percent chance of Rain in the forecast today, Florida
Florida: 100 percent chance of rain in the forecast today, according to Tony Cristaldi, a meteorologist with the National
Weather Service in Melbourne.
Rough weather packed with heavy rains and the potential for tornadoes was expected to roll through the Space Coast overnight before giving way to more traditional, Christmastime temperatures.
A low-pressure system that formed in the Gulf of Mexico is expected to barrel across the state today. The heavy rains will clear out by Saturday but will be followed by a substantial drop in temperatures for the area, Cristaldi said.
Cristaldi said residents should check late-evening forecasts and keep weather radios nearby. Storms favorable to forming funnel clouds — including waterspouts — will be in the area today.
There will also will be a risk of rip currents and the potential for roadway flooding in some areas because of expected downpours.
The rough weather is the latest storm pattern to march across the state in recent weeks, something forecasters attribute to the influence of El Nino, a weather phenomenon that generally means a greater potential for unstable winter weather.
“We’ve had a very active subtropical jet stream that’s typical of what happens during El Nino. It may not mean constant storms but increases the likelihood we’ll be stormier and wetter than usual,” Cristaldi said.
By Saturday, temperatures will struggle to reach 70 degrees. By Sunday night the low temperatures will drop to about 38 degrees.
“Temperatures have been running above normal. By next week, it’ll be much colder,” Cristaldi said
